Police have released the name of the victim of a fatal accident at Matamau last month.

The incident happened in the early hours of Monday April 15th, when a person was hit by a vehicle on State Highway 2.

Yesterday Police said the victim was 43-year-old Christopher Connell from Masterton.

A Police spokesperson said their thoughts were with Mr Conell’s family and friends, and that enquiries into the circumstances of the accident were ongoing.


A 15-year-old youth has been charged in relation to an alleged assault in Waipukurau two weeks ago that saw the victim taken to hospital with head injuries.

The assault happened at the Herbert Street – Russell Street intersection on the 17th of April. Senior Constable Andy Walker said the youth has been charged in relation to this incident.

He said the same person has also been charged in relation to a break-in at the indoor pool in Waipukurau on Sunday morning.

A window was smashed to gain entry to the complex, stealing items from the kiosk area.

Mr Walker said the youth was located at a nearby property on Monday evening.

He said initially the youth fled on foot, but returned to the address later in the evening, and was arrested.


A fundraiser for new beds for cancer patients has sold out. The CHB Cancer Support Group’s Fashion Parade is being held at the CHB Municipal Theatre in Waipawa this Sunday.

The aim is to raise about $6000 for two new beds to allow cancer sufferers to remain in their homes.
